I stayed in school after I finished my GCSEs and then completed A-levels in Computer Studies, Business and ICT, along with the Welsh Baccalaureate.

After that, I joined Kier as a Management Trainee, which meant that I could also study for a degree in Construction and Commercial Management while I was working.

There is so much variety, and so many different construction roles, that there is something for everyone.

What company do you work for now?

I’m still working in construction with Kier Construction – they’re a principal contractor who build and refurbish projects for both private and public sector clients.

You can only get a true feel for what a job entails and other possible roles when you start to work in an industry.

What is the highlight of your day?

I’d have to say for me it’s the morning meeting I have with the sub-contractor supervisors. What we do is get together for about fifteen minutes in the morning to discuss the plans for the day and how many workers each trade will have on site. In this meeting we’ll also discuss any access issues, design issues and other general enquiries and see if we can resolve them there and then so that when they leave, each supervisor is fully aware of their aim for that day. Then, the next morning, we’ll review what was completed and finalise aims for the working day.

Where would you like to go in your career progression?

I would love to be responsible for my own construction project one day. At the moment, I’m responsible for certain areas on site, but it would be great to expand on these experiences and then have a construction management project for which I’m completely responsible for.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about going into construction?

I would say go for it! As with many other construction jobs, there is so much variety, and so many different roles, that there is something for everyone. You can only get a true feel for what a job entails and other possible roles when you start to work in an industry, so try it out and get a true snapshot of it.
